Noah's new disease

For those of you who have never had the pleasure of babysitting Noah, you may not know that he has power poop. The kind that drives away people, animals and small bugs that may be in a 50 foot area. My brother claimed that it stunk up their like (put in huge number here) sq foot home...you get the idea. So immediately potty training was commenced but after a year, I'm still changing diapers. Not only that, but they became diarrhea about every 10 time and he poops about 4-6 times a day. Now you might be wondering why I choose to enlighten all with this particularly gross info. Well, also over the last year he's lost weight and there wasn't much to lose, grown only 1 inch in 2 years, has stomach pains on a regular basis, and tells me he is hungry about every 15 minutes.

We finally saw a specialist and after some sticking and prodding and oh yeah, tubes going down his throat, he was diagnosed with celiacs. What is celiacs? Well, if it happened to me, it would be life over as I know it. But since I have this love affair with food that might be tad more that the average person, its probably not quite that dramatic. Noah is allergic to gluten aka the protein found in wheat, barley, rye and most oats. It means that his body sees gluten and sends out the troops to destroy it. But in doing so, it destroyed his stomach and intestinal wall so that food, not just gluten, couldn't be absorbed hence the tiny boy I love to see every day.

So he's been started on a gluten free diet. Which means no more grandma sycamore bread, gold fish, birthday cake, donuts, crackers, kikkoman soy sauce and cream of anything soup (those seem important for some reason) and about 60 percent of the food out there. I will no longer be shopping with my children since I have to read every label to see if it contains gluten, modified food starch, natural flavors, and any number of things that can be places for gluten to hide. And believe it or not, I liked shopping with my kids, because my husband is always there and it feels like a family outing. I know, I'm crazy. I'm a tad sad that I'll be shopping alone, most of the time. So there you have it. The Lord knew that I was unorganized and somewhat not caring about it and so blessed me with a child that will force me to be the most prepared (every time we leave the house, outing, vacation, etc must be thought through and planned for), the most organized women I can possibly be.

By the way, when I told Noah that he was not going to have diarrhea anymore he said, "Oh thank you mommy!" Adorable!

My sister in law's whole family has celiac so if you need more resources let me know. Once you get use to it and find the tasty substitutes it is pretty easy to be gluten free. so glad you figured it out.

Poor little guy. Good thing you found out what it was. I think that Lisa Niedrich's son has that too. She would be a good, close person t get info from.

Funny I was thinking of him/you the other day and wondering how the potty training was going:) Poor guy, hope he understands. You might have to tell him he'll get diarhea if he eats (fill in the blank) every day! Good luck! Sounds like it's not so uncommon.

Wow! I can't imagine having to cut all of that food out of my house and be so careful looking at labels. You can do it though! I am happy for him that you found out what it was! I miss you and want you to call next time you are in Boise!!

Maren...Yikes! That is a lot to deal with! I'm so glad you can move forward now. I've always wanted an excuse that forces me to pay more attention to my food intake :). Not sure I would want it for my kid though! My heart goes out to you. Thank goodness they can figure those things out. I miss you and hope life is going well. We need to chat sometime soon. Becca
P.S. Thanks for the great explanation in lay-man's terms! :)

Oh sweet Noah! And YIKES for you! Dealing with allergies....not fun! However, the great thing is that there are MANY MANY resources now! I don't know if you have been seeing the GI in Boise, Dr. Thompson, but one of his secretaries knows the ins and outs of stores in Boise that help.

There are a lot of places on line you can order from. My sister in law has the same thing and they order a lot of gluten free stuff online.

I have heard that Boise has a store that is for people with allergies. It has a gluten free section, or is all gluten free. I think even Fred Meyer in Twin has a gluten free isle.

I hope that helps! To rescue yourself in the store call Atkinsons or Albertsons and ask if they have a dietician you can meet with. I am 99% sure Atkinsons does. They can walk you through the whole store telling you what is ok and what is not, without all the label reading! YAY! I love convenience!

Oh, and Rice Chex has a gluten free cereal. It says gluten free on the box and it is good! :)

I'll let you know if I hear about anything else!

YAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS! At least you have a direction to go now! Hang in there sista!

Hi Maren,
It's me...staci, from Burlingame. My sister just found out that her son has this (along with egg, nut, soy, dairy...allergies) and the boy is 11. I have seen how the diagnosis is life changing for the kid and the mama for a variety of reasons. I'm glad they figured it out early on. My poor nephew has bleading ulcers that they are trying to heal before they even allow him to eat tomatoes, oranges and anyting else acidic. Packing a school lunch is not so easy. There are lots of resources though. Good luck!

Bummer! Do you want me to fly up and go grocery shopping with you? I'll even read labels for you!

We have a lady in our ward with the same thing and she even has the deacons bring her "special" sacrament bread. Such fun right?!?

Maren- I don't know if you have Trader Joe's by you, but they have a million gluten free things.
